NNA – Public Works and Transport Minister, Fayez Rasamny, affirmed on Wednesday that security at Beirut Port was under “close and continuous scrutiny,” firmly rejecting any media reports that cast doubt on the facility’s safety.
Speaking during a press conference following an inspection tour of the port, Rasamny emphasized that operations at Beirut Port would be managed with the same “rigor and seriousness” applied at Rafic Hariri International Airport.
Moreover, Rasamny said that he had convened a meeting with all security agencies operating at the port, instructing them to tighten procedures and enhance surveillance efforts to safeguard the facility. He categorically dismissed recent allegations of arms smuggling, describing them as “unsupported by any evidence.”
“Beirut Port is a vital asset for all Lebanese,” Rasamny stressed. “We will not allow the dissemination of misleading information that compromises its security. The security file is a top priority.”
Rasamny then revealed that the government was moving ahead with a comprehensive plan to bolster oversight across all border points, including maritime, land, and air terminals, by equipping them with state-of-the-art scanners.
The Works Minister also underscored the need to redefine the legal framework governing the port’s operations, calling for the review, amendment, and enforcement of existing regulations. He noted that the interim committee overseeing Beirut Port will provide detailed recommendations for its development.
In conclusion, Rasamny pointed to the presence of five different security agencies currently operating at the port. He called for the establishment of a unified body or directorate exclusively tasked with port security, similar to the structure in place at Rafic Hariri International Airport.
