NNA – House Speaker, Nabih Berri, on Thursday met with Democratic Gathering leader and Progressive Socialist Party head, MP Taymour Jumblatt, at the second presidency in Ain al-Tineh.
The delegation included MPs Marwan Hamadeh, Akram Chehayeb, Hadi Abu al-Hassan, Wael Abu Faour, Faisal Sayegh, former minister Ghazi Aridi, and party advisor Houssam Harb. Discussions centered on the latest political developments, especially the presidential file and efforts for national consensus.
After the meeting, Aridi conveyed the Democratic Gathering's stance and the results of their consultations with various parliamentary blocs, aiming to resolve the presidential impasse. He emphasized that Speaker Berri had provided numerous facilitative ideas but noted the lack of immediate positive results, underscoring the need for continued dialogue amid Lebanon's dire circumstances.
Aridi highlighted Speaker Berri’s neutrality and commitment to dialogue, suggesting a timeline for choosing a president either through consensus or by selecting from a shortlist of candidates. He called for unity and cooperation with Speaker Berri to expedite the electoral process.
Addressing whether the Democratic Gathering had persuaded the opposition to engage in dialogue, Aridi mentioned the French envoy's support and the necessity of ongoing communication despite existing obstacles, reaffirming alignment with Speaker Berri’s efforts.
Speaker Berri also met with the head of Regie, Nasif Seklawi, who outlined Regie's achievements and challenges, particularly supporting southern farmers facing Israeli aggression. He pledged continued support for these farmers.
Later in the afternoon, Speaker Berri received Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, accompanied by Supreme Defense Council Secretary General Major General Mohammad Mustafa and Army Chief of Staff Major General Hossam Choucair. They discussed the ongoing Israeli aggression and the security situation, especially in southern border villages.
