Customs seize 55 tons of smuggled fruit, imposes fines worth 17.6 billion Lebanese pounds

NNA - As part of its ongoing efforts to protect national agricultural produce, the Customs Directorate's Anti-smuggling Unit, under the directives of the Agriculture Ministry and in coordination with the Ministry of Economy, seized 55 tons of smuggled apples and pears over two days. The entire shipment was confiscated and handed over to the Lebanese Army.

The total fines imposed on violators amounted to 17.6 billion Lebanese pounds, equivalent to twice the value of the seized goods. This step aims to deter smuggling operations that cause significant damage to the agricultural economy and food safety.

The Ministry of Agriculture affirmed that combating smuggling is a national priority, emphasizing continued coordination with official authorities to uncover the networks involved and take the maximum legal action against perpetrators, to protect local produce, ensure market stability and citizens' health.
