NNA - Minister of Communications, Johnny Corm, on Friday highlighted the ongoing political sensitivity in Lebanon, noting the unprecedented international support for the ceasefire, which was backed by 161 countries.
However, Corm expressed concern over Israel’s continued aggressive actions, emphasizing that Lebanon remains committed to the 2006 ceasefire agreement despite the widespread destruction.
In an interview with Sputnik Radio, Corm revealed that the total estimated damage to Lebanon’s communications sector from the recent conflict is between $88 million and $117 million. He pointed out significant destruction to both landline and mobile networks, with 30% of the damage affecting fixed-line services.
"This sector, crucial for emergency communication, was already strained due to a lack of substantial investments since 2017," Corm explained.
The Telecoms Minister then announced a recovery plan involving the installation of 250 wireless stations, with an additional 135 to follow, funded by a donation from China. He also mentioned the government's efforts to secure foreign aid to rebuild Lebanon, underscoring the urgency of international support.
It is to note that a cabinet session will be held in Tyre to discuss reconstruction plans and further reforms.
