Severe cold wave disrupts schools, agriculture, and water supply

NNA - Lebanon currently experiences an intense cold wave, with temperatures dropping 7 degrees below seasonal averages, causing widespread ice formation on mountain roads and the closure of most schools for a second consecutive day.

In Dannieh, icy conditions blocked main and secondary roads from 400 meters above sea level, while snow accumulation at 900 meters hindered traffic. Schools remained closed, and frozen water pipes cut off drinking water for many homes. Severe frost also damaged winter crops.

In Baalbek, sub-zero temperatures caused ice formation on roads and frozen water pipes, disrupting water supply. Schools either closed or delayed classes until 9:00 am. However, rising morning temperatures melted the ice, restoring normal traffic and business activity.

In South Lebanon, 36 schools remained closed, particularly in higher-altitude areas, while 78 coastal schools in Sidon and Tyre operated normally. The private sector in Sidon suspended classes due to the harsh weather conditions.
