NNA - The ruinous earthquake that has destroyed an entireregion on the border between Turkey and Syria isclaiming thousands of victims and the countcontinues to rise.

The tragic event occurred in a region that has beenthe scene of a bloody war for more than 11 years.The Community of Sant'Egidio - which has alreadymobilized to come to the aid of the population - isparticularly concerned about the governorates ofAleppo and Idlib in Syria, which have beendevastated by the conflict and where littleinternational aid is reaching because of theinternational sanctions affecting the country.

"We believe it is time to suspend the sanctions to allowrelief to arrive copiously and as quickly as possible tohelp the people exhausted by war and earthquake.

The Community of Sant'Egidio appeals to theinternational community to facilitate urgenthumanitarian access to Syria - by air and by land -so that as many of those affected and those who havelost everything in this cold winter can be rescued."
