Abu Faour broaches refugees' dossier with Kelley, UK Minister

NNA - Caretaker Minister of Social Affairs, Wael Abu Faour, met Tuesday at his office in the Ministry with the UNHCR representative, Ninette Kelley, over the condition of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Abu Faour later met with the Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Development in the UK, Mark Lowcock, accompanied by the British Ambassador to Lebanon, Tom Fletcher.

Lowcock told reporters that the meeting, which touched on the Syrian refugees' dossier, was "fruitful and constructive." "Britain and the international community highly appreciate the tremendous generosity of the Lebanese people for hosting the Syrian refugees," he said.

"Britain has granted USD 800 million to deal with the displaced Syrians' issue and it will be offering USD 500 million to the entire region," he noted.

Pointing out at the heavy burden the Lebanese are enduring due to the massive influx of refugees, Lowcock reminded that the World Bank had put a roadmap to help the Lebanese institutions deal with the related challenges.

"The British government is serious in supporting the World Bank's activities," he stressed.

"Britain shall spare no effort in supporting Lebanon and the countries of the region to face the refugees' crisis," he concluded.
