NNA - The handover ceremony at the Ministry of Energy and Water took place on Thursday between outgoing Minister Dr. Walid Fayad and newly appointed Minister Joe Saddi, in the presence of advisors, directors-general, and department heads.

Fayad welcomed Saddi, highlighting their longstanding professional relationship and expressing confidence in his successor’s ability to manage the ministry’s responsibilities.

Reflecting on his tenure, Fayad noted the dire state of Lebanon’s energy sector when he assumed office, citing minimal electricity supply, a devastated Electricité du Liban (EDL) headquarters, and severe fuel shortages.

Under his leadership, Fayad implemented reforms, including increasing electricity supply to 10 hours daily without government subsidies, securing fuel agreements with Iraq, and restructuring electricity tariffs to restore EDL’s financial health. He also emphasized advancements in renewable energy, including solar and wind power projects, and legislative reforms to modernize the sector.

In petroleum, Fayad highlighted eliminating fuel subsidies, boosting the financial standing of oil facilities, and enhancing transparency in fuel procurement.

The former Minister also underscored progress in offshore gas exploration and licensing rounds.

In turn, Saddi pledged to continue reforms, depoliticize the ministry, combat corruption, and enhance institutional transparency.

The newly appointed Energy Minister promised to build on previous achievements while addressing remaining deficiencies, prioritizing electricity and water sector improvements.
