Economy Minister discusses housing loans, Beirut’s Banking Street reopening with Antoine Habib

NNA - Caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, Amin Salam, on Thursday met with Antoine Habib, Chairman and General Manager of the Housing Bank, with whom he discussed the bank’s projects and potential collaboration with the ministry.

Following the meeting, Habib stated that discussions focused on securing a loan from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and an upcoming visit to Qatar in mid-February to obtain housing loans for low- and middle-income individuals.

Talks also covered a proposal to reopen "Banking Street" in downtown Beirut, which remains partially closed.

Habib explained that while the street is accessible at both ends, the middle section remains blocked. He highlighted efforts to gain support from Beirut’s key stakeholders for the reopening, noting that the Ministry of Economy and Trade has rented a building on the street through the Central Bank.

Minister Salam expressed full support for the initiative and pledged to advocate for reopening the street, emphasizing the need to reconnect all parts of Beirut’s downtown.

Habib underscored the street’s strategic importance, as it links Allenby Street to Weygand Street and Riyad El Solh, making its reopening essential.
