Korkomaz, Hassan: Prosecution's evidence is circumstantial

NNA - Accused suspect Mustafa Badreddine's lead counsel Antoine Korkomaz said on Friday during a press conference at The Hague for defense attorneys of Badereddine, Hassan Ouneissy and Salim Aayash that there is nothing novel in what the prosecution has shared up till now.

He contended that there was no evidence to prove that there was a conspiracy to assassinate former premier Rafik Hariri and that the martyr was in contact with Hezbollah at that time for matters regarding elections; thus concluding that the General Prosecutor failed to provide motive for said assassination.

"The prosecution is talking about phone calls that are allegedly related to the assassination but the main issue at hand is the content of the conversations and nothing yet has been revealed about them."

Defense Lawyer of Ouneissy, Yasser Hassan, dubbed the tribunal's use of said phone calls as "circumstantial evidence" which could be confuted. He opted for placing the assassination within a political frame and posed the question of why a great amount of explosives were used.

"Who benefited the most from the change of the political regime in Lebanon? That is the question."
