Berri, Brahimi underscore necessity of Lebanon participation in Geneva talks

NNA - Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, and UN peace envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, on Friday dwelled on the impending Geneva II conference, sought to underpin the much-sought dialogue on Syria, and then a political solution to the 31-month-old crisis next door.

Brahimi visited Berri at Ain-el-Tineh today, as part of his official visit in Beirut to meet with the Lebanese top officials.

"It was a useful meeting. We focused on the necessity to make of Geneva II a success and we also highlighted the necessity of inviting Lebanon to attend the conference," Berri told reporters following the meeting.

For his part, Brahimi said he was now in Lebanon within the frame of the visits he was undertaking in the name of the United Nations to prepare for Geneva II conference.

"Truth is that Lebanon is saddled with too many burdens following the drastic situation in Syria. And we, in the name of the UN, thank Lebanon for the role it is assuming," he said.
