Daouk warns situation in Lebanon grave, says should not pursue this course

NNA - Caretaker Minister of Information, Walid Daouk said on Tuesday that the lengthily sought and recently established honour pact formula has been approved by most media outlets in Lebanon.

Responding to a question about the media honour accord, Daouk said that the Lebanese scene has witnessed some media chaos, where red-lines have been crossed many times -- an issue that urged him to put together an honor accord which included many projects.

"The project which has been signed by most media bodies is an honour accord accomplished by media people without the interference of the Ministry, which only played the follower-up and incubator role," Daouk said in an interview with Al-Sharq radio on Tuesday.

He added that the Ministry would distribute copies of this accord to the biggest number of the Lebanese to allow them to know the limits which they should commit to.

Responding to a question about to what extent this media accord would be implemented, Daouk said, "Since this accord is a moral and virtual commitment, every media person behaves according to his ethics without necessarily having penalties imposed on him to act in a good way."

Daouk pointed out that the content of this accord separated between good and bad, saying "at least, now there is a reference".

Responding to a question about media chaos and the role of the Ministry, Daouk said that without the freedom of speech and freedom of media there wouldn't be the Lebanon that they knew, confirming commitment to those freedoms, although these days have witnessed a sort of abuse.

He stressed that the Ministry of Information tried to deal with this issue "away from media to serve media."

Talking about the occurring development in Tele- Liban, the Minister said that great efforts were exerted in this regard, stressing that the National News Agency, Radio Lebanon or Tele-Liban only broadcast objective and precise news, without taking any sides.

Daouk hoped the Lebanese radio and Tele-Liban would have a major role that would deal with general public issues that overlook the Lebanese interests.

Commenting on the cabinet issue, Daouk said that the current cabinet was an outgoing one, stressing the need to form a new cabinet because Lebanon has been suffering from the displaced Syrians' crisis which should be dealt with by the best means available.

"The situation in Lebanon is grave and we cannot continue like this," Daouk concluded.
