Spiritual leaders call for cabinet formation as campaign to revive democracy kick off

NNA - Lebanon's top spiritual leaders upped calls on Monday to form a new government that would save the country from void, as the civil society gathered in front of the national museum to launch the national campaign to revive the democratic system.

"Lebanon was supposed to be open so that it assumes a positive role in the Arab world," Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Beshara Boutros Rahi said from Bkerki.
"The government must be formed today before tomorrow...this is how we return to the democratic system in Lebanon," he stressed.

He added that no one was entitled to derail the work of the institutions.

For his part, vice Head of the Higher Shiite Council, Sheikh Abdul Amir Qabalan, said everyone must work to rescue Lebanon. "We must take the initiative quickly and form an all-inclusive government and we must listen to the initiative of House Speaker, Nabih Berri, and return to the Parliament, mainly to make a new election law," he said.

"Everybody must unite and work for the nation's best interest," he maintained.

In turn, Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani deprecated the policy of betting on changes in the region because, according to him, it derailed the political work inside the state institutions.

"The political work has moved from inside the institutions to the fighting fronts in the streets," he noted.

"The responsibility is in the hands of the President of the Republic. He must take the decision to save Lebanon and the Lebanese," he concluded.
