STL Second Inter University Program

NNA - For the second year, the best 26 students of the Inter-University Programme on International Criminal Law and Procedure have concluded a visit to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).

Their study visit to The Netherlands, which took place this week, included briefings from representatives of all four organs of the STL: Chambers, Registry, the Office of the Prosecutor and the Defence Office. The group also visited the International Criminal Court, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the International Court of Justice as well as the Asser Institute in The Hague.

To assist them further in their studies, the students each received a copy of late former STL President Antonio Cassese's book: International Criminal Law.

The visit coincided with the appeals judgment of the former Liberian President Charles Taylor at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, hosted in the STL courtroom. The students were able to attend the public hearing on such a significant day for international justice.

"The opportunities, contacts and experiences we gained were tremendous. I would be more than glad to dedicate to my life to serving justice," one of the students said.

The visit is part of the Inter-University Program on International Criminal Law and Procedure which is aimed at law students in Lebanese Universities. The program was organized in cooperation between the STL, the Asser Institute in the Netherlands and eight universities in Lebanon: Beirut Arab University, American University of Beirut, Université Libanaise, Saint Joseph, La Sagesse, Notre Dame University, Saint-Esprit de Kaslik and American University of Science and Technology.
