Fletcher: army is defense frontline to protect Lebanon from Syria crisis

NNA - Most recent developments in Lebanon and the broader Arab region topped talks held Wednesday between the Lebanese Forces leader, Samir Geagea, and the British Ambassador in Beirut, Tom Fletcher.

"I discussed with Geagea the situation in Lebanon and the region, namely in Syria, and the awful humanitarian crisis there and its reverberations on Lebanon," the envoy told reporters following the meeting in Maarab.

"The international community must provide more aid for Lebanon to harbor the displaced Syrians," he added.

On his fear of a spillover of the Syrian crisis into Lebanon, Fletcher said that the UK has accordingly decided to contribute to helping Lebanon weather the "storm" through effectively supporting the Lebanese army, which he depicted as "the frontline of defense to keep Lebanon away from the Syrian crisis."

Turning to the local scene, the pair discussed the electoral law issue, whereby Fletcher hailed the Lebanese leaderships "which overcame political rifts as they realize the necessity to agree over elections."
