NNA – Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rasamny, on Tuesday announced a comprehensive two-track plan aimed at reactivating René Moawad Airport – Qlayaat and revitalizing economic activity in its surrounding areas. The initiative, he said, seeks to promote balanced development and strengthen critical infrastructure.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the airport in Akkar Governorate, Rasamny highlighted the site's strategic assets. “We came today to René Moawad Airport – Qlayaat to assess its logistical potential, including its vast open spaces and proximity to the coastline. Clearly, we cannot proceed with reactivation without first ensuring the establishment of a robust road network connecting the airport to its surroundings,” Rasamny stated.
The Minister further revealed that the Ministry had already begun preparing a comprehensive study of the access roads leading to the airport. Parallel to this, engineering firm Dar Al-Handasah is developing a general master plan for the project.
“Once the studies are completed,” Rasamny added, “the airport’s economic trajectory and its underlying investment potential will become clearer.”
The Public Works Minister further emphasized that the government's vision for Qlayaat Airport extended beyond serving the Akkar region.
“We do not view this airport as merely a local necessity, but as a promising strategic asset for Lebanon as a whole. Today, we are presenting this opportunity to potential investors and remain open to collaboration with any party demonstrating serious commitment to adopting and advancing this project,” Rasamny concluded.
