Inaugurating Italian Film Festival in Lebanon: A Cultural Between Italy and the Middle East

NNA - The Italian Embassy in Lebanon and the Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with Metropolis Art Cinema, proudly announce the first edition of the Italian Film Festival, set to take place in Beirut from January 24 to February 2, 2025. This landmark event seeks to showcase the finest in contemporary Italian cinema in a country where, after a period of extensive circulation until the 1980s, recent Italian production have been sparsely represented.

A Celebration of Italian Cinema and Culture. The Festival will open with the screening of Vermiglio, directed by Maura Delpero and nominated for the Oscars, marking its MENA premiere. The closing event will feature a stirring cine-concert of È Piccerella, a masterpiece of Italian silent cinema accompanied by an original electronic score, composed and performed live in its world premiere. This film, directed in 1922 by Elvira Notari—Italy's first female filmmaker—epitomizes a historical moment in cinematic art.

Why Promote Contemporary Italian Cinema in Lebanon? Cinema is not merely a medium of entertainment but a powerful tool for cultural dialogue and mutual understanding. The Italian Film Festival was conceived to bridge the gap in awareness of contemporary Italian cinema in Lebanon—a nation where the classical works are cherished, yet modern productions remain underrepresented. By presenting the current offerings of Italian cinema, the Festival aims to:
•    Portray Modern Italy: Through its stories, landscapes, and characters, cinema mirrors the social, cultural, and economic evolution of Italy. Each film is both of reality and an invitation to explore fresh and authentic perspectives..
•    Foster Intercultural Understanding: Italy and Lebanon share a rich history of cultural exchange and deep-rooted connections. This Festival offers a platform to strengthen that dialogue through the universal and emotive power of film.
•    Showcase Italian Cinema as an International Standard of Excellence: With one of Europe’s most distinguished networks of Film Commissions, Italy is a strategic partner for global productions. This event also highlights Italy’s potential  as a prestigious filming location and encourages the development of Italian- Lebanese co-productions
•    Support the Metropolis Art Cinema: Hosted in a newly reopened venue with support from the Italian Embassy in Beirut, Metropolis Cinema stands as a symbol of cultural rebirth for Beirut. Its reopening has garnered messages of support from iconic figures such as Cate Blanchett and Nadine Labaki.
