NNA – Sheikh al-Aql of the Druze community, Sheikh Dr. Sami Abil-Mona, on Wednesday held a series of local and international calls on Wednesday as part of ongoing coordination efforts with political leaders to help contain the deadly incidents unfolding in the Syrian areas of Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya.
Among the key contacts were Grand Mufti of Syria Sheikh Osama Al-Rifai and Lebanese Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian. The discussions centered on defusing tensions sparked by orchestrated attacks targeting members of the Druze community in Syria.
Sheikh Abil-Mona affirmed the community’s resilience, stating that “our honorable people in Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya are capable of defending their land and dignity.” He called on Druze leaders and community members to “exert every effort to extinguish the flames of discord that malicious actors seek to ignite,” while urging restraint, protection of sacred values, and rejection of provocations.
In response to the developments, the General Assembly of the Druze Council convened an extraordinary meeting at the sect’s headquarters in Verdun, Beirut, on Wednesday afternoon.
The session, chaired by Sheikh Abil-Mona and attended by MP Walid Jumblatt, Druze ministers, lawmakers, judges, and senior clerics, aimed to assess the evolving crisis and adopt an appropriate position.
