NNA - The Beirut Marathon Association organized Sunday the 16th edition of its annual sports event, with the participation of 48,000 runners of 109 different nationalities this year, a record compared with previous years.
In an issued statement by the Association, it indicated that "this sports event, with its national dimension year after year, has demonstrated its importance and necessity for the consolidation of civil peace and the opportunity for the Lebanese to meet and express their aspirations for a nation of peace and political and economic stability."
"The record of participants is a 'yes' referendum to the Beirut Marathon Association for its activities, especially the marathon, since the 8km race alone recorded a participation of 28,000 runners who took to the streets of the capital, Beirut, in an atmosphere of joy, peace and rejuvenation," the statement added.
"This race was also a platform for many institutions and associations to express their positions through slogans and figures that transformed the race into something like a rainbow," the Association went on.
"One of the most striking signs was the participation of most diplomatic missions in the race, and there was also a remarkable participation of deputies, especially Youth and Sports Committee Head, MP Simon Abi Ramia, and various members of the Committee in the non-competitive 8 Km race," the statement indicated.
It is to note the marathon set-out in the early hours of the morning from the Beirut Waterfront area, as official figures, deputies, senior military officers, diplomats and various runners from different countries gathered at the starting point.
Moroccan runner Mohammed Reza Al Arabi (participant in the 50th World Military Marathon) won the men's first place with a 41: 10: 2 score, while the Ethiopian runner Medin Armino won the women's first place with a score of 31: 29: 2.
