NNA - The closing arguments of the International Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) were launched this morning in The Hague and the hearing started with a pleading before the representatives of the victims spoke, followed by the defense.
In the first session, attended by the son of late Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri, the Prosecution declared that "Mustapha Badreddine was a senior official in Hezbollah and his military experience resulted in his leading the Party's forces in Syria." "This was revealed in the manner in which the assassination of Rafic Hariri took place," it added.
"Badreddine is the mastermind behind the assassination of Rafic Hariri," the Prosecution stated.
It added, "Salim Ayyash led the unit of the assassination of Rafic Hariri comprised of six members," pointing out that "the evidence condemning the accused of the murder of Rafic Hariri is compelling."
"The Syrian regime is at the heart of the plot to assassinate Rafic Hariri," said the Prosecution, adding that the "green" network that led the assassination is entirely affiliated with Hezbollah.
"The evidence is convincing, strong and objective through the size of communications, and the defendants' phones have stopped operating at the same time, which reflects the planning to implement the plot," the Attorney General told the Court.
The victims' lawyer said: "The assassination took place in an atmosphere of rejection of the Syrian presence in Lebanon."
