Syrian Foreign Ministry handsover kidnapped Canadian to the UN

NNA - Syrian Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry handed-over Thursday Canadian Attorney, Karl Sergei Campo, to the United Nations, following his kidnapping in Damascus 9 months ago.

The Canadian lawyer was working with the United Nations to monitor separation of forces in the Golan, when he was abducted by gunmen last February in the area of "Khan Sheikh" situated in the Syrian Capital's countryside.

In a press statement following the hand-over operation, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told reporters that the "tragedy of Campo's kidnapping, which lasted for 9 months at the hands of terrorist groups with no justification, has now come to an end."

"The Syrian government has exerted all efforts possible to free Campo since his abduction and return him to the UN and his family," added Mekdad.

In turn, Campo described his kidnapping incident as a "nightmare and horrible experience."

"I feel that I have now come back to normal life," added Campo. He explained that he managed to escape his kidnappers when they forgot to close the door to the room where he was kept, whereby he was able to run away across the fields and rivers.

"Iraqis, Saudis, Jordanians, and possibly Chechens, were amongst of the armed group that was holding me captive," noted Campo.
