Maronite Bishops welcome international decisions to keep Lebanon aloof from regional conflicts

NNA - The Maronite Bishops Council held its monthly meeting at the Patriarchal See in Bkirki, headed by Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi, in the presence of Cardinal Mar Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, with talks touching on pastoral and political dossiers.

At the end of the meeting, the issued statement dwelled on Rahi's meeting with his Beatitude Pope Francis at the Vatican during his participation in the annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Council for media to discuss means to include the Church's teachings in modern digital technologies.

In their statement, the Bishops thanked Pope Francis on his call to devote September 7 a day for fasting and prayers for the sake of peace in Syria, the Middle East and the world.

They also welcomed the international decisions to neutralize Lebanon from the Syrian crisis and all its consequences.

The Bishops praised the role of the President of the Republic at this level and his seeking to dissociate Lebanon from regional conflicts in order to preserve its image as a place that brings together cultures and religions.

They also considered that the key for saving the country and solving the people's pending issues was to form a government that puts national interests above all considerations.

The statement finally pointed at the army and security forces deployment in the southern suburbs of Beirut and elsewhere, which put an end to the phenomenon of self-imposed security.
