Sleiman chairs meeting to control entry of displaced Syrians, prepare for New York conference

NNA - President Michel Sleiman headed at the presidential palace in Baabda a meeting attended by outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati and caretaker Ministers of Interior Marwan Charbel and Social Affairs Wael Abu Faour as well as the general Security Chief, Major General Abbas Ibrahim.



Conferees discussed measures to control the entry of refugees from Syria into Lebanon in accordance with international law and humanitarian considerations.



Sleiman later chaired a meeting also attended by Mikati as well as caretaker ministers Ali Hassan Khalil, Wael Abu Faour, Hassan Diab and Marwan Charbel, Fayez Ghosn and Nicolas Nahas, in addition to former Minister Ziad Baroud and the Director-General the Ministry of Finance Alain Biffani.



The meeting aimed to prepare for the conference to be held in New York on September 25, devoted to Lebanon in particular, in order to support its stability and its institutions, its army and its economy.



It is also aimed to address the growing burden of refugees and to agree on a funding mechanism.



Before the meeting, Sleiman met with Mikati over the political and governmental conditions and the ongoing contacts between the political forces at this level.



Sleiman had also received the Head of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Véronique De Keyser, accompanied by the Ambassador of the European Union Angelina Eichhorst with talks touching on the Union's means to address the refugees' crisis.
