Bassil: Maaloula incident aims to expel Christians

NNA - Caretaker Water and Energy Minister, Gebran Bassil, on Sunday said that acts of aggression against the Syrian village of Maaloula were a part of schemes to displace the Christians of the East.

Speaking at a press conference he had held at his Batroun residence, Bassil said, "what adds salt to injury is the fact that the Christians of Maaloula were being bullied and forced to convert to Islam."

Bassil referred to remarks made by former French President Nicolas Sarkozy who said that there was no place for Christians in the East, especially in Lebanon and Syria. He also referred to those made by U.S. Secretary of Foreign Affairs John Kerry two days ago when he highlighted the paramount importance of protecting the Christian minority in the Middle East region.

The Caretaker Minister went on to describe the Lebanese as divided into two parts -- one challenging the actions of Takfiris and another accepting them.

"Christians stand before two choices; either to accept the orientalist Christian policy which advocates acceptance of others, or accept the arrival of Takfiris to power in the name of democracy, "he warned.

Bassil, herein, pushed for a unified position that snubs scenarios leading Takfiris to power, cautioning that this would eventually fuel a war that would likely lead to the expatriation of Christians.
