USAID Assistant Administrator Nancy Lindborg visits Lebanon

NNA - United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance Nancy Lindborg visited Lebanon as part of a regional trip to discuss assistance for Lebanese communities hosting Syrian refugees and U.S. development assistance for Lebanon, as well as U.S. assistance for the Syria crisis to date, a statement by the US embassy in Beirut said Thursday.

"Ms. Lindborg met with Caretaker Minister of Social Affairs Wael Abou Faour, UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Resident Representative Ninette Kelley, and local implementers of USAID assistance projects. Ms. Lindborg also visited the UN Refugee Registration Center in Ramlet el Baida, meeting with newly registered Syrian refugees and participating in a roundtable discussion with Syrian women to discuss the particular challenges they face," it indicated.

"In her meetings, Ms. Lindborg highlighted President Obama's recent Eid al-Fitr announcement, which brought total U.S. humanitarian assistance for the Syria crisis to over $1 billion. Of that total, the United States has provided $180 million to Lebanon to help both refugees and Lebanese host communities," it added.

"Ms. Lindborg reaffirmed the continuing commitment of the United States to work with the international community to assist Lebanon in meeting the needs of Lebanese host communities as a result of the Syrian crisis. Ms. Lindborg highlighted the Embassy's on-going engagement with Lebanese organizations, the private sector, and international development partners to craft new, smart programs that make the greatest impact in the areas - such as education and water supplies -- that matter most. Ms. Lindborg commended Lebanese communities for their generosity in hosting refugees from Syria fleeing the violence in their country. She welcomed the Government of Lebanon's efforts to meet their needs and encouraged the government to continue its close cooperation with UNHCR, UNRWA, and other international and non-governmental organizations. She underscored the U.S. Government's appreciation for Lebanon's commitment to meet its international obligations, including respect for human rights and the protection of refugees in Lebanon," it said.

"Ms. Lindborg noted Embassy initiatives to assist the Lebanese people, highlighting that USAID has redirected existing programs to address three key challenges: local service delivery, conflict mitigation, and income generation. From education, to water, to agriculture, and local governance, these activities improve the delivery of vital services to Lebanese, expand economic and educational opportunities, and support the active participation of youth in addressing challenges in their communities," it continued.

"Ms. Lindborg further renewed the commitment of the United States to a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon," the statement concluded.
