Gemayel ups calls for Arab, international action to free abducted archbishops

NNA - Kataeb Party leader, Amine Gemayel, on Tuesday contacted by phone the new head of the Syrian Opposition Coalition, George Sabra, and called him for a wide Arab and international action to save the lives of Syriac Orthodox and Greek Orthodox archbishops, abducted yesterday in Aleppo.

Gemayel said the two archbishops should be freed "to preserve the reputation of the Syrian revolution."

He also called upon the states wielding influence on the opposition and rebels to pressure them to curb such practices harming the "revolution."

Gemayel contacted today the Patriarchs of Greek Orthodox and Syriac Orthodox, respectively Youhanna X Yazigi and Ignatius I Aeiwas, and condemned the archbishops' abduction.

He also contacted Beirut Greek Orthodox archbishop Elias Audi.

He will be following up on this matter with a number of Arab and international political and diplomatic leaders.

As noting that the abduction occurred the same day George Sabra was appointed on top of the Coalition, he saw that kidnappers sought to play down the symbolism of tasking him with leading the "revolution."

Separately, Gemayel contacted by phone the French Ambassador to Lebanon, Patrice Paoli, to condemn the fresh attack on the French embassy in Libya.

He also contacted MP Fouad Siniora for talks over latest political developments.
