Security Forces: MP Merehbi opens fire in the air in demand of security checkpoint elimination

NNA - Deputy Mou'een Merehbi opened fire in the air before a security check-point along the western side of the Beddawi Highway on Sunday, in demand of eliminating said check-point, an Internal Security Forces communiqué indicated.

In details, at the hour 18:00 on Sunday, Tripoli's regional gendarme police initiated a security plan in the area, which included establishing two security check-points targeting construction violations within the Beddawi region.

However, MP Merehbi arrived at one of the check-points at the hour 19:30 and demanded the officer in charge to remove said checkpoint on grounds that it is hindering traffic. The officer explained to Merehbi the purpose of the security plan put into effect, urging him to contact his superiors for his request.

Consequently, Merehbi lashed out in anger at the security officer, opening fire in the air using an armed weapon in his possession. Merehbi also approached one of the security vehicles at the check-point, giving orders to a security man to move it from place, which the latter refused to obey; thus, resulting in clashes between them.

No causalities were reported as a result. Furthermore, investigations have begun into the incident, under supervision of the concerned judicial authorities.
