NNA - Minister of Education and Higher Learning, Hassan Diab, on Tuesday sponsored a ceremony to launch a project titled "Protecting children surfing the Internet," organized by the Education Center for Development and Research, at the Education Ministry.

Labor Minister Salim Jreissati, a representative of Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour, National News Agency Director Laure Sleiman Saab, and a panel of concerned figures and dignitaries attended the event.

In a word delivered on the occasion, Minister Diab shone light on the massive yet risky usage of Internet, especially by youth.

He said the Internet indeed masks many dangers, especially that the usage of browsers and social media is still uncontrolled.

"Internet users' security has become a major concern," he said, calling for the adoption of measures likely to ensure protection of children using Internet by curbing any risk of exploitation and preserving the secrecy of private info.

Diab did not fail to point out the role of the parents in that respect, as many are incapable of controlling the Internet usage by their children.

"We must multiply our efforts so as to raise awareness among youth over Internet usage," he added.

He concluded that the Ministry of Education and Higher Learning has devised a project aimed at guaranteeing children's safety in that respect. But he noted that it was impossible to fully control the web surfing.
