(UPDATE) Bkerki's gathering: Not to run for elections based on 1960's law

NNA - Lebanon's top Christian pillars and dignitaries confirmed on Wednesday that they would not be running for elections that are based on the 1960's electoral law.

A meeting by the nation's major Christian leaders took place Wednesday afternoon at Bkerki, upon the invitation of Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Beshara Boutros Rahi.

"This law [1960 election law] is sheer injustice to Christians, a thing which is utterly refused by the majority of its components," a statement issued in the wake of the meeting said.

Besides, conferees have agreed over a specific work period to discuss a new electoral plan. They also requested from Interior and Municipalities Minister, Marwan Charbel, to stop taking in candidacies that are based on the 60's formula.

"The Orthodox electoral plan is suspended pending the end of discussions over a new election law," the statement added, stressing the importance of holding elections on their set date, or approving a technical delay if need arises.

Head of the Change and Reform bloc MP Michel Aoun, Marada Movement leader MP Sleiman Franjieh, Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan, Kataeb Deputy Sami Gemayel, Free Patriotic Movement lawmaker Alain Aoun, and former Minister Youssef Saade also took part in the meeting.

Following the meeting, Caretaker Interior and Municipalities Minister, Marwan Charbel, visited Bkerki to offer the Maronite Patriarch well-wishes for Easter.

"My visit has nothing to do with Bkerki gathering. I happened to be abroad during Easter, so I'm here to offer Rahi well-wishes," he said.

Rahi's meeting with Charbel witnessed the presence of MPs Sami Gemayel, George Adwan, Alain Aoun, Former Minister Yusuf Saadeh, as well as Bishops Samir Mazloum and Boulos Sayyah.
