Charbel: Lebanon can only be built through agreement

NNA - Caretaker Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Marwan Charbel, maintained on Tuesday that the country could not be built through excluding others, but rather through agreement.

He also stressed that there could not be any electoral law or a new government without the much-sought agreement.

Charbel visited today the General Directorate of the Internal Security Forces, where he chaired a security meeting comprising Acting ISF Chief, General Roger Salem, and a panel of police brass.

In his address, Charbel said the ISF institution has become the most prestigious security body in Lebanon as constituting the backbone of the state through its security, administrative, and judicial powers.

He held out hope that the ISF would remain a unified institution that operates away from politics and sectarianism.

He also hoped a new government would be formed in the nearest time possible in order to appoint a new ISF Director General and a command board.

As pointing out that a caretaker government is entitled to oversee the elections, he indicated that the Ministry was now preparing for holding the polls on the basis of the current 1960 law.

But he noted that in case the hybrid law was approved, the Ministry would need six months to finalize relevant preparations.

On the issue of the Lebanese pilgrims abducted in Syria, Charbel said their case was not elapse or ignored. "Their case depends on complicated political circumstances which we hope to defuse," he said.
