NNA - Interior Minister Marwan Charbel on Wednesday said that the Ministry's role is of major importance in terms of improving municipal work and boosting local democratic life.



Charbel represented President Michel Sleiman today in the ceremony of "The day of the Mayor" held at the UNESCO in presence of members and Chairman of the Mutual Lebanon Mayors' League's Board of Directors.



"The Ministry supports all efforts exerted to strengthen mayors' situation and guarantee their rights," he said.



The minister also stressed the ongoing developments on the domestic scene and affirmed that the state was determined to prevent discord from spreading not to allow the country become an arena for regional differences.



"Security apparatuses are ready to assume their national responsibilities in order to limit the impact of Syrian incidents in Lebanon," he added.



Charbel explained that the government's resignation did not denote that security apparatuses shall resign their responsibilities.
