NNA - In an issued statement Tuesday, MP Elias Hankash warned "Environment Minister Fadi Jreissati of the grave consequences of the environmental crime reflected in the landfill of Bourj Hammoud - Jdeideh - Baouchrieh - al-Sad, namely in attempting to expand the landfill or establish a new section."
Hankash considered that the people of the Metn region have suffered enough of this issue. "As we confronted it in 2015, we will face it again today because people's health is more important than anything else," he asserted.
"We have followed with great interest during the past days, but with growing concern, the statements of the Environment Minister and we were not surprised by the procrastination, which is still the prevailing logic in order to reach the zero hour and force citizens once again to choose between the bad and worse option," Hankash went on.
He indicated that what was really surprising was the "irresponsibility" of the Environment Minister, who indicated that he had asked deputies of the Metn to help his Ministry in identifying potential sites for a proper landfill without getting any response from them to-date. Hankash stressed herein that "solving the waste crisis is the duty of the Environment Minister."
"Although finding solutions is not our direct responsibility, we did present ideas and remedies to the ministerial committee in charge of this dossier back in 2015. We strongly opposed the establishment of the Bourj Hammoud landfill through demands and demonstrations and resigning from the government, all of which coincided with repeated warnings voiced by MP Sami Gemayel," explained Hankash. However, he unfortunately noted that all their inquiries and alerts on this subject received no response from the concerned sides.
"Therefore, we find it necessary to remind each official that being appointed minister is not a luxury but a duty, whereby the executive authority minister is obliged to find solutions and not to describe the problem," Hankash corroborated .
