Serra: The priority is to prevent escalation

NNA - UNIFIL said in a statement Sunday that the UN force radar detected the launch of two rockets from the vicinity of Khiam, in southern Lebanon, towards Israel.

According to the statement, the Israeli army informed the interim force that two rockets fired from Lebanon hit the neighbourhood of Kiryat Shmona, in northern Israel, and the Israeli army retaliated by firing shells at the source of fire.

Thus far, no information was reported about casualties or damage from both sides of the border. No party has claimed the shooting.

The commander of UNIFIL, General Paolo Serra, contacted both Lebanese and Israeli armies, urging both sides to exercise restraint to prevent any military escalation.

"The incident is dangerous. It violates international resolution 1701 and is clearly aimed at undermining stability in the region. Priority for UNIFIL is to prevent any military escalation on the ground. All parties have confirmed their willingness to cooperate with the UN force to achieve this end and maintain their commitment to the cessation of hostilities," said Serra.

"Our forces are on the ground alongside the Lebanese army to consolidate security and determine the location where rockets were fired from. UNIFIL has increased patrols in the area to prevent any further incidents."

General Serra also stressed the need to identify the instigators of this violation.
