NNA - President of the Republic, Michel Sleiman, met at the Presidential Palace in Baabda Saturday Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta with talks reportedly focusing on bilateral relations, support for the LAF, and aid of the International Community with the plight of Syrian refugees.
Also present at the meeting was Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Morabito.
Both officials stressed the need for continuous international support to fortify Lebanon's stability and economy as well as aid the Lebanese armed forces. The International Community's commitment to share the burden of the Syrian refugees with the Lebanese state was also of paramount importance.
In the issue of supporting the LAF, both officials were adamant on bolstering the army as an institution that embodied the unity of the state and held the sole right to maintain the country's security.
Letta asserted Italy's readiness to up the level of its support for the Lebanese army, especially in the areas of training and military experience. In his turn, Sleiman lauded Italy's decision to organize an international conference in Rome to support the capabilities of the Lebanese armed forces, in coordination with the United Nations and Lebanon.
