NNA - Lebanese Forces party leader, Samir Geagea, visited the Church of Our Lady of Transition in Bkirki and paid farewell to Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir. He then went to the salon of the edifice, where he offered condolences to Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi.
Geagea described this day as "the day of great joy, because Patriarch Sfeir always preferred to be in the place where he is today... For us, everything that has happened so far, and the response of the Lebanese people, were a kind of testimony to everything that Patriarch Sfeir represented from a spiritual point of view.. He lived a life of asceticism (...) filled with integrity, transparency and sincerity."
"During the days of the Syrian guardianship, when the Pope of Rome visited Syria during Assad's reign, the Patriarch refused to accompany him to Syria, not because he did not like to visit Syria and the people, but because he believed that Assad's regime was greatly detracting from the sovereignty and national dignity [of Lebanon]. (...) What happened was a great victory for what Patriarch Sfeir stood for," Geagea recounted.
"I ask the Lord to help Patriarch Rahi continue the journey of a series of Patriarchs, the last of which was Patriarch Sfeir. The journey is not easy, but it is what has led to the Lebanon we know, and it will eventually lead to the Lebanon we want," Geagea concluded.
